Dr.C Rangarajan succeeded S
Venkitaramanan as the 19th Governor of the Reserve Bank of India. Before
becoming the Governor, he served as the deputy Governor from 1982 to 1991.
He was also a member of the Planning Commission and a member of the Tenth
Finance Commission. He holds a PhD in Economics from University of
Pennsylvania. His tenure saw several measures being taken to strengthen the
financial sector. New institutions and instruments were introduced and
change in exchange rate management lead to establishment of unified exchange
rate. During his tenure the new series of Mahatma Gandhi Banknotes of
denomination Rs.10, Rs 50 and Rs 100 were released along with the new Rs.500
note with security thread and identification mark for the visually impaired
introduced. After his tenure as Governor he went on to serve as Governor of
Andhra Pradesh, Orissa and Tamil Nadu. He was also appointed as member of
Rajya Sabha and is currently the Chairman of the Prime Minister’s Economic
